Founded with service members in mind

As an Army Veteran, Mark Frank, CEO and co-founder of SonderMind, saw firsthand how delays in mental health access affected those he served alongside.

That experience continues to shape our work today, supporting Veterans, service members, and their families across every stage of the military lifecycle.

Your questions, answered

Is there therapy specifically for military spouses?

Yes. Military-informed therapy can help spouses navigate deployment and reintegration, frequent PCS moves, solo parenting, career disruption, caregiving, loneliness, and uncertainty. A therapist can help you process difficult emotions, manage stress, strengthen communication, and develop healthy coping strategies.

How can therapy help military families?

Therapy can help military families manage relocation, deployment-related separation, reintegration, parenting stress, and changing family roles. It can also help family members communicate more clearly, manage conflict, and rebuild routines after a transition. Children and teens can be included when appropriate.

Does SonderMind offer therapy for military children and teenagers?

Yes. SonderMind offers therapy for children and teens. There is no strict minimum age, but provider availability depends on your child’s age, location, needs, and the therapist’s experience. TRICARE covers medically necessary mental health care for eligible beneficiaries of all ages. Use SonderMind’s matching flow or directory to find a provider who works with your child’s age group. Does SonderMind offer medication management and psychiatric care for military dependents and children?

SonderMind can connect military family members with psychiatric providers who treat children, adolescents, and adults for concerns such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, and trauma. What are common challenges military spouses and families face?

Military spouses and families may face long separations, frequent PCS moves, career disruption, loneliness, solo parenting, and worry during deployments. Reintegration and changing family roles can also be difficult. These challenges are understandable, and support is available through therapy and other military family resources.

Does TRICARE cover therapy for military spouses and families?

Yes. Eligible spouses and dependents have TRICARE coverage for medically necessary mental health care, including individual therapy and psychiatry. Couples or family therapy may be covered when it is part of treatment for a diagnosed mental health condition, but general marriage counseling is not covered. Learn more about using TRICARE with SonderMind and check your plan for specific benefit details.

Can we do military marriage or family counseling online?

Yes, in many cases. Online couples and family therapy can make care more convenient for families managing separation, relocation, or busy schedules. For TRICARE to cover family therapy, it must be medically necessary as part of treatment for a diagnosed mental health condition in one family member. Whether family members can join from different locations depends on where each person is located and whether the provider is licensed to provide care in those states. Your provider can explain the options for you and your family.

What is the difference between Military OneSource counseling and therapy through SonderMind?

Military OneSource offers confidential, short-term, non-medical counseling for concerns such as stress, relationships, grief, parenting, and adjustment. SonderMind connects people with licensed therapists and psychiatric providers for clinical services, including ongoing therapy, psychiatric evaluations, and medication management. Military OneSource counseling is generally not available to someone already receiving therapy from another provider, so the services typically are not used at the same time.

We received PCS orders to another state. Can I keep seeing my SonderMind therapist online?

It depends on whether your therapist is licensed and credentialed to provide care in your new state. If they cannot continue treating you after the move, SonderMind may be able to match you with another provider. Availability depends on your location, benefits, and provider network.

How do we get started with counseling for our military family?

SonderMind can match your family with a licensed provider based on your needs, location, insurance, and preference for online or in-person care. You can also browse the provider directory. Military-informed providers are available who understand challenges such as deployment, relocation, reintegration, and parenting stress.
