Your first appointment with a psychiatric provider is often longer than recurring sessions. You’ll provide deeper insight into your reasons for reaching out, and they’ll get critical information to develop a personalized assessment of how to best help you.
After an initial evaluation, your provider builds an assessment and determines the best approach for your care. This could include any medications they prescribe, which are called in directly to your pharmacy of choice.
Your provider works with you to make sure you reach the outcomes you want. And, if they refer you for talk therapy or if you need a new therapist, we can help connect you.
Alicia is a registered nurse and certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP). She helps patients across the state of Colorado through Video Telehealth®, and works directly with their primary care doctors to deliver whole-person care.
SonderMind’s psychiatric providers, like Alicia, are dedicated clinicians with rigorous education, medical training, and licensed credentials in mental and behavioral healthcare in their state. Our network supports a range of mental health needs through evidence-based approaches to care.
Psychiatry is an area of medicine that diagnoses, treats, and helps prevent mental, emotional, and behavioral health conditions. Psychiatric providers go through medical school or nursing school, and have specific, state-issued credentials in mental health care. Because of their medical background, they are able to prescribe medication as part of their treatment approach. They can also provide talk therapy and other forms of medical intervention. Psychiatric appointments are typically scheduled every few weeks or months, depending on your treatment needs.
Therapy, also known as talk therapy, is a clinical form of health care that can be used in conjunction with psychiatry, or on its own, to effectively treat challenges and symptoms relating to mental health and emotions. There are several evidence-based approaches to psychotherapy that can be used for different mental health needs. Therapy appointments are typically scheduled weekly. Although most talk therapists do not have a medical background, they do have extensive clinical training and hold a variety of state-issued credentials along with doctorate or masters degrees in mental health care.
Both psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners are trained medical professionals who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and behavioral health conditions. They can both prescribe medication. The primary difference is in their credentials and educational background. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have completed a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school and residency program in psychiatry. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are registered nurses and certified advanced practice nurses who have completed nursing school and a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program.
Determining the cost you’ll pay for psychiatric services depends on a number of variables. Most notably, if using your health insurance, the cost passed along to you depends on your specific plan’s terms and mental health benefits. We always recommend calling your insurance provider directly to ask about your mental health benefits and specifically what you can expect to pay for certain services or medications. They’ll be able to provide the most updated and accurate information, including any copays, coinsurance, and deductibles you have. To learn more about using your insurance with SonderMind, visit sondermind.com/insurance. If you do not have insurance and would like to know more about self-pay rates, give us a call and our team will be happy to help.
After giving us a call to start your intake, we’ll connect you with a psychiatric provider within 48 hours. You can call, email, or message your provider directly through your SonderMind account, or they may reach out directly to you to schedule your first appointment. Most appointments are scheduled within the following week.
