Psychiatry? Therapy? Both?

Everyone is different. That’s why we don’t approach your care as a one-size-fits-all solution. If you’re uncertain about whether meeting with a psychiatric provider, a therapist – or both – is the best solution for you, here is a general overview:

Psychiatry

  • Initial evaluation, with follow-ups as needed
  • Psychiatric providers can prescribe medication and other medical treatments
  • Conducted by a board-certified psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner (MD, DO, PMHNP)

Therapy

  • Routine and recurring sessions
  • Many modalities and coping techniques exist for a variety of specialized needs
  • Conducted by a state-licensed mental health therapist (Masters-degree or higher)

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between psychiatry and therapy?

Psychiatry is an area of medicine that diagnoses, treats, and helps prevent mental, emotional, and behavioral health conditions. Psychiatric providers go through medical school or nursing school, and have specific, state-issued credentials in mental health care. Because of their medical background, they are able to prescribe medication as part of their treatment approach. They can also provide talk therapy and other forms of medical intervention. Psychiatric appointments are typically scheduled every few weeks or months, depending on your treatment needs.

Therapy, also known as talk therapy, is a clinical form of health care that can be used in conjunction with psychiatry, or on its own, to effectively treat challenges and symptoms relating to mental health and emotions. There are several evidence-based approaches to psychotherapy that can be used for different mental health needs. Therapy appointments are typically scheduled weekly. Although most talk therapists do not have a medical background, they do have extensive clinical training and hold a variety of state-issued credentials along with doctorate or masters degrees in mental health care.

What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

Both psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners are trained medical professionals who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and behavioral health conditions. They can both prescribe medication. The primary difference is in their credentials and educational background. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have completed a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school and residency program in psychiatry. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are registered nurses and certified advanced practice nurses who have completed nursing school and a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program.

How much does SonderMind psychiatry cost?

Determining the cost you’ll pay for psychiatric services depends on a number of variables. Most notably, if using your health insurance, the cost passed along to you depends on your specific plan’s terms and mental health benefits. We always recommend calling your insurance provider directly to ask about your mental health benefits and specifically what you can expect to pay for certain services or medications. They’ll be able to provide the most updated and accurate information, including any copays, coinsurance, and deductibles you have. To learn more about using your insurance with SonderMind, visit sondermind.com/insurance. If you do not have insurance and would like to know more about self-pay rates, give us a call and our team will be happy to help.

How quickly will I be connected with a psychiatric provider?

After giving us a call to start your intake, we’ll connect you with a psychiatric provider within 48 hours. You can call, email, or message your provider directly through your SonderMind account, or they may reach out directly to you to schedule your first appointment. Most appointments are scheduled within the following week.

If the match I receive isn’t the right fit, can I find a different provider?

Absolutely. We know that not every mental health provider is the best match for every person’s mental health needs. With SonderMind, you have access to a vast network of local, trusted providers, and a committed team who’s here to help you get the best possible care. To request a new provider match, you can give us a call or request a rematch directly from your SonderMind account.

Can I see a psychiatric provider and a therapist with SonderMind? How do I request both?

Yes. SonderMind’s network includes a variety of licensed mental health professionals, including both psychiatric providers and therapists. Give us a call at (844) 714-1716 anytime to request matches for both psychiatric providers and therapists, or if you’d like to add a provider type to your care team.

Can I see a list of providers to choose from?

You'll notice we do not have a directory of providers to scroll through. Instead, we take on that work for you and connect you with the right provider to best support your needs. If it’s not working out, you can request a rematch at any time to make sure we connect you with a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner who gets you.

Are you a mental healthcare provider?

We are always looking for experienced therapists, psychiatrists, and psychiatric nurse practitioners to join our team.
